Earlier this year, the Irv R. String Local 152 Scholarship Fund opened for members and their dependents to apply for a college scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year. After careful deliberation by the Scholarship Committee, award winners were selected. Congratulations to our six award winners!
2023 Irv R. String Scholarship Winner Abidul Bhuiyan
ABIDUL BHUIYAN
Abidul Bhuiyan will attend Rutgers University, New Brunswick where he will major in Exercise Science to become a Physical Therapist. He also plans on attending graduate school to earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
Abidul volunteers for various organizations such as Atlantic City Marathon, Hope for the Holidays, and Salvation Army Toy Drive, to name a few.
Abidul and his mother, Hasina Monnee, are both UFCW Local 152 members at Acme Markets in Ventnor, New Jersey.
2023 Irv R. String Scholarship Winner Julianne Chan
JULIANNE CHAN
Julianne Chan is currently attending Rutgers University where she is studying Environmental Engineering with a concentration in water resources and remediation. Julianne plans to obtain a career with the Environmental Protection Agency and get her Master’s in Environmental Engineering before pursuing a PhD in Water Resource Engineering.
Julianne volunteers for various organizations such as Honors College Serves, Engineers Without Borders, and Stafford EMS to name a few.
Julianne’s mother, Wing Tang, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Saker ShopRite in Manahawkin, NJ.
2023 Irv R. String Scholarship Winner Sophia Fagan
SOPHIA FAGAN
Sophia Fagan is currently attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick where she is majoring in Linguistics and minoring in Developmental Psychology. She plans on obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology/Communication Disorders.
Sophia currently volunteers at local nursing homes and farms and is also on staff at the Rutgers Daycare facility.
Her mother, Roxanne Fagan, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, NJ.
2023 Irv R. String Scholarship Winner Mayra Matos-Diaz
MAYRA MATOS-DIAZ
Mayra Matos-Diaz is currently attending Montclair State University where she plans to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biology to become a veterinarian.
Mayra volunteers at local soup kitchens, animal shelters, and educational programs to name a few.
Mayra’s father, Angel Matos Stokes, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Johanna Foods in Flemington, NJ.
2023 Irv R. String Scholarship Winner Aidan Ruth
AIDAN RUTH
Aidan Ruth is planning on attending Duquesne University where he will major in Physical Therapy.
Aidan volunteers for the Conrad Weiser Youth Soccer programs and youth travel soccer and he is also a mentor for younger Reading Page players. He assists in pool and roadside cleanups to keep the community clean.
Aidan’s father, Chad Ruth, is a shop steward and UFCW Local 152 member at Berks Packing in Reading, PA.
2023 Irv R. String Scholarship Winner David Theuma
DAVID THEUMA
David Theuma is currently attending Rowan University where he is majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Chemistry. He plans on obtaining a job as an engineer at a reputable Fortune 500 company.
David has volunteered with the Kiwanis Club, peer mediation, and Honors BLAST just to name a few.
David is a UFCW Local 152 member at Village ShopRite in Hammonton, NJ.
