Earlier this year, the Irv R. String Local 152 Scholarship Fund opened for members and their dependents to apply for college scholarships for the 2019-2020 academic year. After careful deliberation by the Scholarship Committee, award winners were selected. Congratulations to our seven 2019 Irv R. String Local 152 Scholarship Fund winners!
SAMANTHA CONNELLY
Samantha is a senior at Hempfield High School and is planning to attend Lock Haven University where she will major in Health and Physical Education. Samantha has participated in mini-thons, internships for health and physical education, ultimate frisbee club and was awarded a gold key award and honorable mention award in 2019 for Scholastic Art and writing awards contest. She also volunteers through her church with a group called Appalachian Service Project and has been to a missions’ trip to help rebuild damaged homes for the less fortunate and participates in cooking meals at homeless shelters. Her father, Thomas Connelly, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Kunzler & Company.
ALEXIA CORNEAL
Alexia is a senior at Middle Township High School and is planning to attend Atlantic Cape Community College where she will major in Exercise Science to one day become a physical therapist. Alexia has participated in clubs such as Student Council, Red Cross Club, Key Club and Art Club. She is also part of the Lacrosse, Varsity Track and Field and Varsity Cross Country teams. She has volunteered at the Galloway Fire Hall for ham and oyster dinners, MLK Center Homework Club, CMCH Library children helper and Central Park clean up. Her mother, Alice Austin Richards, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets.
SARAH DRONGOSKI
Sarah is a senior at Egg Harbor Township High School and is planning to attend Stockton University where she will major in General Studies and Forensics. Sarah has participated on the All-Star Softball Team, Rec Softball, Key Club and volunteers with the Clam Diggers for community clean ups. Sarah is a UFCW Local 152 member at Village ShopRite.
CYNTHIA GIBBS
Cynthia will be attending Strayer University where she is majoring in Business Administration to attain her Bachelor’s Degree. Her future goals consist of a career in Health Care Administration. Cynthia graduated from Camden High School in 1984 and after working two jobs, spends all of her free time enjoying her granddaughter. Her husband, Harry Gibbs, is a UFCW Local 152 member at J & J Snack Foods.
KAITLYN E. JONES
Kaitlyn is a senior at Williamstown High School and is planning to attend Rowan College where she will major in Nursing. Kaitlyn plans on becoming a Nurse Practitioner. She has participated in the dance program, Health Careers Club, Student Council and Academic Excellence Award. She has also volunteered with annual blood drives and community trash cleanup. Her mother, Karen Cortez, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets.
MAYRA FREIDA MATOS-DIAZ
Mayra is a senior at Phillipsburg High School and is planning to attend Raritan Valley Community College where she will major in Veterinary and Animal Sciences. Mayra plans on becoming a Veterinarian. Mayra has participated in Key Club, FFA, Environmental Club, Drama Club and National Honors Society. She has also volunteered at the Common Sense for Animals animal shelter, Soup Kitchens at Wesley Methodist Church, Adopt-A-Family through Kiwanis and fundraising for UNICEF. Her father, Angel Matos-Stokes, is a UFCW Local 152 member at Johanna Foods.
HOLLY RIGHTER
Holly will be attending Atlantic Cape Community College where she will major in Nursing. Her future goals consist of a career as a Registered Nurse. Holly works two jobs and any free time is spent being a mom. Holly is currently a UFCW Local 152 member at Acme Markets and Victoria Manor.
